Featured Poet- David Garlick
David Garlick was born in Berkley, CA. in 1933 to British parents. His father, Anton, a Research Chemist and his mother, Stella, a scholar. He had one older sister and later another brother. David’s family left there when he was at the age of four to return to England. His father was then employed by Bahrain Petroleum Company on Bahrain Island in the Persian Gulf.
When the family reunited in 1940, David was educated at BAPCO School and later, due to Second World War, continued in Kashmir, India.
David’s mother died in 1944 and the family returned to UK in 1946 where David continued his education at Kings School, Canterbury. Dyslexia and Attention deficit syndrome, made this an unlikely mix. David left school in 1950 to train at Honeywell in Process Control Instrumentation. This was the beginning of a successful career. David later worked for BAPCO in Bahrain and became a Senior Maintenance Supervisor.
David married Elizabeth Appleby, RN in 1959. They had three children, all born on Bahrain. They left Bahrain in 1967 to emigrate to Canada. David was employed by Catalytic Enterprises in Fort McMurray, Alberta and later out of Edmonton, Alberta as a Process Instrumentation Specialist. Later, David was Design Supervisor for Associated Engineering. The family left Edmonton 1977 to live in Victoria B.C. After retirement in 1986, David started writing poetry and short stories.
All through his life, despite academic learning problems, David loved the flow of words and phrases. Once he started writing, with the help of a computer, the words sprang from his mind, building from his adventures in the many countries he has visited and lived in.
David hopes you will find his writings enjoyable, simple to read, amusing, informative, wicked, salacious occasionally and yet loving, most of the time. He offers you “Words of love and laughter.”
